Mr. Gent has suggested, in view of the press reports appearing in this morning's "Times" of the Centenary celebrations in Hong Kong, that the S. of S. might like to send a message to the Governor on the occasion. The greater part of the celebrations originally planned, e.g. the unveiling of a statue of His Majesty and firework displays, have been postponed until the conclusion of the war. The present
celebrations are confined to a special issue of postage stamps and as the "Times" report tells us to church services and special broadcast talks.
I might add something on the matter of dates The landing party which originally took possession of the island in the name of Her Majesty landed on the evening of January 26th 1841, but the Proclamation setting up British jurisdiction in the island was not made until February 2nd.
